World Water day 2024

The World Water Day is an annual United Nations (UN) observance day held on the 22nd of March that highlights the importance of fresh waters in the world. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources all over the world.

The theme of World Water Day 2024 is;'Water for Peace.’ Water can create peace or spark conflict. When water is scarce or polluted or when people have unequal or no access, tensions can rise between communities and countries. By cooperating on water, we can balance everyone’s water needs and help stabilize the world .

As climate change impacts increase, and populations grow, there is an urgent need, within and between countries, to unite around protecting and conserving our most precious resource.

Public health and prosperity, food and energy systems, economic productivity and environmental integrity all rely on a well-functioning and equitably managed water cycle.

Activities

To celebrate this week, Tunza Foundation worked together with the Pangani Basin Water Board and other environmental organizations in a three - day campaign from 20th – 22nd March 2024. Our theme as quoted in Swahili was; UTUNZAJI WA VYANZO VYA MAJI NI JUKUMU LETU SOTE.

The campaign involved cleaning and trash picking from river sources in Moshi Municipal, planting trees in river sources and primary schools and environmental seminars. Below is the preview of the activities.

Day 1: 20th March 2024

On this day we cleaned the Coffee Curing spring famously known as Deep Sea, the spring that is found at the center of Moshi Municipal. It was overwhelming to find the amount of trash and litters thrown on the area surrounding the spring and in the spring. Most of them were plastic bottles and domestic wastes.

We started by picking trash and wastes thrown in the areas surrounding the spring and then we picked the trash thrown in the spring.

Day 2: 21st March 2024

On this day we cleaned the Rau River located in the Moshi district. The situation was similar to the one we found in the Coffee Curing river. We took a small opportunity to inform the residents around the Rau River about the importance of keeping the river clean. As we did the day before, we cleaned the area surrounding the river before cleaning the river.

Day 3: 22nd March 2024

This was the peak of the celebration. On this day we did not clean rivers but rather we celebrated by planting trees and raising awareness among the youth and the younger generation about the importance of environmental and water conservation. The Pangani Basin Water Board planted 200 tree seedlings of baobab, quinine tree and water carrier trees on the banks of the Goa River in Moshi Municipal.
